Draft 7
There are many major additions made in this draft that were included after I had reflected and evaluated my composition. Overall, I was happy with the sound but concerned with the lack of techniques consistent with the Romantic style. In response to this I added dynamics to give greater direction to the musicians and to help convey the story of the poem. For example in bars 7-8 a crescendo was employed to emphasise and convey the 'barren height' of this spruce tree which in turn emphasises the tree's feelings of loneliness. In bar 9, the use of piano dynamics emphasises and conveys that the tree sleeps. The other significant stylistic characteristic was the addition of arpeggiated chords, common in the Romantic period. These chords only occur in the 2nd verse, which contrasts the two verses and creates interest.
Furthermore, In this draft I managed to finish the piano accompaniment for the 2nd verse which kept the same idea employed in the first verse. Reflecting on the last verse, with more time I would conclude this lieder differently as i'm unhappy with the finish. However, i'm satisfied with the end product.
